House of Cards edition by Michael Dobbs Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

I read Francis Urquhart's dialog like Kevin Spacey's Frank Underwood in my head and it fit perfectly. Overall the book was a good read and forced me to learn a bit more about the politics of Parliament, but there were some slow spots. I did, however, expect the slow spots, because the (American) show suffers from the same problem. I would recommend it to anyone who has kept up with the American version of House of Cards on Netflix to see how it resembles the book. I plan to read the sequels as well.

House of Cards edition by Michael Dobbs Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I usually think that books are much much better than movies or series, but not this time. This book will entertain you, but the BBC series is OUTSTANDING!!!

The original BBC--not Netflex--series starring Ian Richardson is superb!! It is 5 stars!!! The screenwriter, who adapted from this novel for the BBC series, won an Emmy. There are 3 series--House of Cards, To Play the King, and The Final Cut.

You owe to yourself to see this series and Ian Richardson's performance.
Had seen the American TV version and was pleasantly surprised by the book. The difference in the locations and traditions of government made the reading more interesting than had it been the same country. Enjoyed it very much.
This tale of political intrigue and corruption is too familiar. Like Darth Vader, our political systems have gone over to the Dark Side where power is destructive and evil. Although most do not resort to murder, I suspect there are plenty of dirty deals. Nevertheless, it is a good read and spins an intriguing story. And of course, wondering what will happen next?
Not having seen the Netflix or BBC series I came to this relatively unspoiled. That said, I did enjoy this book and its look at the inner workings of British politics. Given the author was part of the Thatcher government I wonder how much here was based on real life. OTOH I don't think real people are as thick as some in this story. There's no way someone wouldn't have put it all together before they did, but then there would be no story.
I am very grateful that I watched the Netflix series before reading this. I found Dobbs' writing slow and placid, like a lake, but I could not get involved with the novel. Unless I envisioned Kevin Spacey saying its words. You can hardly notice any movement at all until there is 10% left in the novel, when the protagonist, here called Urquhart, finally makes a move. The rest is all back story on British politics and a slow character development. FU's wife plays an infinitely small role, unlike in the TV show, and you hardly care what she is doing (there is no insight into her thought process). I didn't find the novel bad, but certainly not as witty nor thought-provoking as the screen adaptation.
I first purchased House of Cards because I had watched the first few episodes of the show by the same name and loved it. I purchased the book believing the book is always better. Right? As a read the first chapter I was saddened to discover that the to are vastly different. I continued to read though because the main character is a man you love to hate and I was not disappointed. Michael Dobbs weaves an intricate tale of the pursuit of power.
Where power is wielded on a vast scale is corruption ever far behind. What would a man do, what morals would he leave behind in the pursuit of power? How many lives would he be willing to destroy to reach his goals. Michael Dobbs does a terrific job of exploring these questions.
Though a work of fiction, House of Cards gives a tantalizing look at the desire to be powerful. Mr. Dobbs , furthermore, describes what can happen to men flawed by weakness and unable to hand the power they wield, or worse are unable to acquire the power and stature they desire and believe they are entitled to have thrust upon them.
First of all, I love the book. It drew me in from the start. The story is gripping, the characters captivating, and the narrative is a perfect blend of quick and clever. I love both the US version of the show and the BBC original, so I decided to see what the true original story was like. I had read online that the book and the BBC series have a different ending. When I finished the book, though, I found it was largely the same as the series. Then, in the afterword, I read that the author had reworked the book and made some "minor" modifications.

However, since this edition has effectively replaced the "original," I had to go to some effort to locate the original to compare them. While the stories are largely the same, it appears that the author added whole chapters and in fact changed the ending. I had to read the book effectively twice to figure out all the differences.

Honestly, I prefer the "new" version. The ending in the older version made little sense and made the next two books in the series make even less sense. However, I feel like I was cheated somewhat. I feel like the publisher and author should have let me know the differences, rather than present the book as merely a new edition with "slight reworking" and force me to comb used bookstores to find an original and compare. Was this bad form? You may very well think that, I couldn't possibly comment.
I read Francis Urquhart's dialog like Kevin Spacey's Frank Underwood in my head and it fit perfectly. Overall the book was a good read and forced me to learn a bit more about the politics of Parliament, but there were some slow spots.
