Man and Maid edition by Elinor Glyn Reference eBooks

The other evening, I was watching the film, "The Music Man." Marian Paroo (Shirley Jones) mentioned the author Elinor Glynn, and I decided to reacqauint myself with this author. I picked up "Man and Maid," and read it. I found it to be dramatic, overwrought, and silly. Granted, at the time this novel was written, it was ballyhooed as smut and drivel, and caused a social sensation. By today's standards, it is pretty tame. However, I really didn't like the way the story was written. The storyline was alright, it's just the way it was written that didn't grab me.

Man and Maid by Elinor Glyn is the tale of Nicholas Thormond and Alathea Sharp. Nicholas is a soldier returned home from the war, wounded in body and spirit. He flings himself into various relationships attempting to alleviate his inner torment and self-hatred. Unable to find something to relieve his disgust with life, he decides to write a book. He hires Alathea Sharp to assist him in this process.

During their interactions, he begins to discover an interest in things outside of his own suffering The meaning of life and the purpose of learning the lessons provided by personal suffering. As he grows more aware of his own faults, he realizes he's fallen in love with Alathea- but she can't stand him.

From there commences his plan to win her heart.

This story is one of the best romances I have ever read. There was no cliche lines of love, no falling in love at first sight, none of the idiocy which happens in romances all too often nowadays.

Nicholas' transformation from self-loathing indulgence to self-control and self-efficacy is believable and satisfying. The relationship and struggles between Nicholas and Althea are amusing and the language and history evident in the tale were engaging.

This is truly a must-read for lovers of romance. I give this story 5 stars.
I enjoyed this book, a journal written by wealthy Nicholas who was wounded in the war. He is depressed and bored as he recovers from his wounds. He thinks he is no longer attractive to women so he brushes off the three lovers of his playboy pre-war days and hires a secretary presumably to help him with a book he plans to write. She is young and attractive with a mysterious past which he longs to discover but she is all business. Nicholas wants to chat but she does not engage in much conversation. The story is about how he solves the mystery of her birth and slowly, patiently yet anxiously woos her into understanding that he is no longer the man he used to be both physically and emotionally.
'Mill on the Floss' meets what was an attempt at an inner view on what this author felt an extremely wealthy disabled French warrior's feelings would be as he fell in love with his secretary.
well written. engaging read. its a classic love story but is quite modern though written about 100 years ago. this is one of Elinor Glyn stronger pieces but not exactly my favorite. I have read quite a few of pieces. This piece flows seamlessly from sentence to sentence. The characters although at times can seem irritating they are well developed. Its a nice ending.
What an intriguing book!! What happens when a wealthy, wounded war hero, short a leg and an eye, hires a secretary? Fireworks of course! A bit patriarchal and classist, but the complicated and disabled first person protagonist makes this book supreme in my opinion!
