Good book but there are lots of little typos the editor should have caught. This appears to be an example of where someone relied too much on the spelling / grammar check of their word processor and didn't actually proof the book as closely as they should have. That gripe aside, this book is very useful. I'd have given it a higher rating if not for the errors. I'm looking forward to the other books by the authors.Product details

I have had a home network for a very long time and embraced the idea of a central PC to get information throughout my home. Windows Home Server (WHS) came out a few months after I started and I have adopted the server concept to create a central repository for my family's files.
Being a PC hobbyist, I have tweeked my WHS installations but there was a level of hesitation to do anything too fancy. The old "I don't want to follow contradictory instructions on some forum post and break it all" prevented me from realizing the full potential of my server. But I have already made the investment and it was time to do more, to achieve the "hey it's 2012, my home should be working for me".
It is with great serendipity that Jim and Terry have written this book to provide just the information I was looking for. With their well researched, step by step guides to get more out of my server, I can spend less time guessing and more time enjoying what an inexpensive home server can fully do to make life better.
If you're new to home servers, I would recommend the basic book written previously. But once you have your server up and yearn to do more, this is the book you want.
I have had WHS version 1 for several years through two different computers. I plan on sticking with version 1 for now and was excited to see some of the topics in this book.
I am already saving my music files and photos to the server and wanted to step it up to the next level. So far the book has met my expectations!
I haven't finished the book but then again it isn't that kind of book that you read completely through before using.
Every task is performed on version 1 and on 2011. Some are more complicated than others but it doable...it may just take a few extra steps.

With so many relevant and compelling projects, ideas and Step-by-Step mentoring, they had my attention from the introduction. Who knew that 'Installing PHP and MySQL on Windows Home Server, 25 Essentials, page 179, were the key components to leveraging the Windows Home Server v1 or 2011 as your own blog service for all those family recipes, photo sharing, aggregating family articles and anecdotes, opinion blogging and feedback. Both of these writings provide the key to stimulating a variety of exciting projects and home services to close the loop on personal creativity and home entertainment.
Don't hesitate, get your hands on these hallmarks of windows home computing and add that missing dimension to effective computing.
On the personal side, my wife of 32 years has stooped to calling a mandatory happy hour at 430PM daily just to pry me away from my Windows Home Server projects!
The material covered is as advertised. The screen shots are not legible and are useless on any laptop or android device that I have used.
well written, tells good programs to add to the server and make it more advanced.good add ins to make it well setup for more features
Overall I was very happy with the content provided in 25 Essential Windows Home Server Projects. The material as written was easy to follow and the pictures provided added clarity.
The problem I have with the book in format is that there is no hyperlinked table of contents on the reader. This makes searching for the desired content an exercise in frustration. There is a functional ToC that works on the for PC client so it's not a total loss in this regard, but I'm still disappointed overall. An update with a functional table of contents would make this a no brainer, otherwise, be aware of this limitation.
Lots of great information and illustrations. With dual monitors I can read the tutorial on one screen and remote into the server on the other screen. I worry about the security risks with some of the projects. Be careful.
